About the exhibition

“For this exhibition, I have selected works that are loosely based in pattern and repetition, but also reveal the artists intuition and hand. Here, “mathematical” pattern seemingly breaks down, and becomes more of a suggestion than a rule. As the rules dissolve, each work also displays a quality that could best be described as “awkwardness”.  Amy Sillman once described this important characteristic as “that thing, which is fleshy, funny, downward-facing, uncontrollable; it is an emotional or even philosophical state of being, again the great and noble, and also against the cynical.  It is both positive and negative, with its own dialect, and dialectic."

About the selector

Brett Flanigan is an Oakland-based artist, working primarily in painting and sculpture.  He holds a degree in Molecular Biology from the University of California. Since 2009, he has been consistently exhibiting in galleries throughout the US and Europe. Flanigan has also completed a number of public artworks, including a mural in the Fine Arts building at the University of Nevada, Reno, as well as a large scale public sculpture in downtown Oakland.
