Collection: "Waking, Breathing, Making!" organized by Laura Kamian McDermott (online exhibition)

About the Exhibition

Wake up. Rub our hands together. Deep breath.... Get ready to make stuff!

"Waking, Breathing, Making!" highlights the joy communicated by NIAD artists in their process of making and living creative lives. The works chosen for this exhibition celebrate our domestic lives and the natural world with bold uses of materials, color, and imagination. Every day is a new opportunity to find connection and inspiration in the world around us and our communities. Every day we show up for ourselves and our creative lives. Our creative attention sends far-reaching ripples of care and joy out into the world, and that is important work.

About the Organizer

I am a textile artist with a twenty-five year history of showing up to my studio (or sketchbook!)  as many days of the week as I can manage. I use labor-intensive textile techniques to make work that insists on the value of creative labor. I believe in the power of the handmade to address social ills, support mental and community health, and bring out humanity's more positive traits. I use bright colors to abstract my domestic, natural, and architectural surroundings, with earnestness and humor. A Richmond resident and SFSU graduate, my work has recently been shown at the Richmond Art Center and the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.
