Collection: The House That Jack Built, Selected By Stephen W. Evans (online exhibition)

About the exhibition

"The House That Jack Built" is an exhibition that explores the collection of artist's works in the NIAD Art Center's shop and the relationships that exist among them. The title of the show takes its name from the folk song This Is the House That Jack Built, which tells the story of a house, built by Jack, that indirectly links many other people and things through a domino effect of chain relationships, that all circle back and initiate from the house that jack built. This selection of artists and their work examines ideas of place, dwelling, and structures, both formally and metaphorically, and how, in proximity, they create new narratives of connected-ness and extensions of the self to others.

About the selector

Stephen W. Evans was born and raised in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania, where he received a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of the Arts in 2010. In 2017, Stephen received his MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama with his wife, Lauren Frances Evans, and their four-year-old daughter, Agnes. Stephen is a full-time preparator and art handler for the Birmingham Museum of Art, and is an adjunct professor at Samford University, teaching art appreciation.
