The Leviathan’s great mass finds buoyancy in the chaotic unknown. A monster roaming untraversed space. “Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear.” A force of order at the top of the hierarchy. The greatest threat, the best defense. These artists depict creatures that lurk in our fears or dreams, they offer warnings or acceptance of danger, they illustrate brave continuation in the face of ultimate uncertainty. Humanity.

About the selector

Ethan Gill is a painter based in San Francisco and Chicago. He studied painting at Northern Illinois University and earned an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014.
