Collection: The Whole Body, Selected By Alex Stark (online exhibition)

About the exhibition

As I begin to discuss and search for representations of disability, and bodies similar to my own, I consider a complex and timely conversation about diversity that affects and influences us all. 

In this show, The Whole Body, I consider relations between paintings and drawings, and sculptural forms. Many of the selected pieces reflect a relationship to cultural figures like Aretha Franklin, mythological figures like Poseidon, and still others reference self or others. In combination, the depictions of human forms emphasize connectivity and relationships, while describing and advocating for a multitude of identities.

About the selector

Born in Boulder, Colorado, Alex Stark is a painter who also loves to curate. Alex Stark created and directs Rare Visions Gallery Project, LLC, in Boulder. Currently an advisor in the Disability and Learning Resource Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Alex has developed a set of shows that he calls The Voices Embodied Project.  The Project considers disability in relation to identities and the whole body. Alex also received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016 and actively shows his work in Chicago, New York and Colorado.
